In this episode of American Horror Story Dr. Arthur Arden who seems to have a complex with women, looks at what is supposed to be a statue of the virgin Mary in the christian religion and yells, "Whore!"

He puts red lipstick and make up on the white statue and then knocks it down watching it shatters into pieces.

Whether you're religious or not, I'd say these are pretty bold themes we see in the American Horror Story this season.

Judging by all the other crazy stuff that happens, that scene doesn't seem as crazy compared to all the others. That isn't the first time the character has acted this way. He also calls other female characters whores and has a history of beating women in a sadistic fashion after bringing them home from dates.

Sister Mary, the nun, also opens her legs and offers herself to him, right before this incident, who he also calls a whore.

Interestingly, sister Mary Eunice, who flirts with Dr. Arthur Arden, kills a patient earlier in the episode.

Not to mention, Dr. Arthur Arden, who knocked down the Mary statue, and beat Sister Mary Eunice for flirting with him also tried to rape one of the female patient's in this same episode before cutting off her legs. Yes, this season is a little nutty.

American horror story season 2 episode 3 Mary statue

If you know about American Horror Story, you already know the themes surrounding religion and sexuality, but dropping the statue of Mary may be a level up. Either the producers went to some messed up Catholic school, simply hate religion or are just trying to create an all out terrifying tale playing on our society's myths, taboos and beliefs.

What do you think? Should people be offended by the scene with the shattering of the statue of Mary?
